On 27 March 2010, the lights of many major buildings in more than 4,000 cities worldwide were switched off during Earth Hour, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature to raise awareness of the effects of climate change. In London the lights were switched off at Picadilly Circus (right), the Palace of Westminster, Bucking- ham Palace, Tower Bridge, Trafalgar Square and 10 Downing Street.
